Claiming Your Inheritance

In today’s society, wills are fairly common. You may or may not be aware that you are included in the will of one of your family members. Sometimes the testator will disclose that information and sometimes they will not. You will usually be contacted by the decedent’s attorney if you are due inheritance from an estate. Once you’ve been contacted, there are steps that will need to be taken to receive that inheritance.

If you are contacted by the decedent’s attorney, he or she will likely tell you about the reading of the will. At that point, the details of the will are disclosed to the family and those that are due inheritance.

Once you are aware of what inheritance you are due, you will need to prove your identity to the executor of the will. The executor is often the decedent’s attorney. Through the executor you can set up a transfer of money from the decedent’s account to yours or you can arrange to pick up any items that might be left behind for you.

Claiming an inheritance is not always this simple. Sometimes wills become contested and the case is forced to go through probate court. When this happens, claiming your inheritance will become delayed.
