Handling The Estate Left Behind By A Friend Or Loved One
Losing someone you love can be one of the most trying and stressful experiences in your life. The death of a friend or family member is something that is incredibly difficult to make sense of, deal with, or move beyond. The initial surge of grief, anger, guilt, confusion, or shock following bereavement can easily overwhelm anyone, child and adult alike.
When you lose someone close to you, it is difficult to know what to feel. Paradoxically, the distinction between what you should or should not feel is really irrelevant. The important thing is that you let yourself feel. The most natural first reaction to such a traumatic event is denial. Though natural, denial cannot last; eventually you must come to terms with your loss. For this reason, it is much better to acknowledge your emotions than to suppress them. Grief, anger, despair – it is ok to feel any of these. The sooner you let yourself feel them, the sooner you can move past them.
Seeking support is important as well. You may want to push everyone away and be alone, but remember that doing so is counterproductive. Friends and family provide one of the best support systems anyone could ask for. Alternatively, you may seek out people who have experienced loss in the past, or find a trained therapist or counselor to help you through.
After going through a traumatic loss, give yourself time to heal. Patience is the key. Don’t make any major changes in your life – odds are that you will regret it later. Also, don’t forget to take care of yourself. Eating well, sleeping well, exercising regularly – these are the mundane things that will make a big difference in the long run. Life is for the living. As trite as that might sound, its message rings true: when dealing with the death of a loved one, don’t forget to deal with the realities of life.
